Instrumental Variable Estimation of Treatment Effects for Duration Outcomes

چکیده
Instrumental Variable Estimation of Treatment Effects for Duration Outcomes In this article we propose and implement an instrumental variable estimation procedure to obtain treatment effects on duration outcomes. The method can handle the typical complications that arise with duration data of time-varying treatment and censoring. The treatment effect we define is in terms of shifting the quantiles of the outcome distribution based on the Generalized Accelerated Failure Time (GAFT) model. The GAFT model encompasses two competing approaches to duration data; the (Mixed) Proportional Hazard (MPH) model and the Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) model. We discuss the large sample properties of the proposed Instrumental Variable Linear Rank (IVLR), and show how we can, with one additional step, improve upon its efficiency. We discuss the empirical implementation of the estimator and apply it to the Illinois re-employment bonus experiment. JEL Classification: C21, C41, J64

Treatment Effects With Censoring and Endogeneity
This paper develops a nonparametric approach to identification and estimation of treatment effects on censored outcomes when treatment may be endogenous and have arbitrarily heterogeneous effects. Identification is based on an instrumental variable that satisfies the exclusion and monotonicity conditions standard in the local average treatment effects framework. The paper proposes a censored qu...

An Economic Analysis of Exclusion Restrictions for Instrumental Variable Estimation Instrumental variable estimation requires untestable exclusion restrictions. With policy effects on individual outcomes, there is typically a time interval between the moment the agent realizes that he may be exposed to the policy and the actual exposure or the announcement of the actual treatment status. In suc...
متن کاملInstrumental Variable Estimation for Duration Data: A reappraisal of the Illinois Reemployment Bonus Experiment
In this article we focus on time-to-event studies with a randomised treatment assignment that may be compromised by selective compliance. Contrary to most of the extensive literature on evaluation studies we do not consider the effect of the treatment on some average outcome but on the hazard rate. In time-to-event studies the treatment may vary over time. Another complication of duration data ...
متن کاملInstrumental Variable Estimation for Duration Data
In this article we develop an Instrumental Variable estimation procedure that corrects for possible endogeneity of a variable in a duration model. We assume a Generalized Accelerated Failure Time (GAFT) model. This model is based on transforming the durations and assuming a distribution for these transformed durations. The GAFT model encompasses two competing approaches to duration data; the (M...
متن کاملInstrumental variable analysis for estimation of treatment effects with dichotomous outcomes.
Instrumental variable analyses are increasingly used in epidemiologic studies. For dichotomous exposures and outcomes, the typical 2-stage least squares approach produces risk difference estimates rather than relative risk estimates and is criticized for assuming normally distributed errors. Using 2 example drug safety studies evaluated in 3 cohorts from Pennsylvania (1994-2003) and British Col...
